- There's a Java Security window from Battelle Memorial Institute telling me that "Granting the following is high risk." Is it safe to click Grant, or should I click Deny?
- I cannot enter my password - the application beeps when I try to enter some characters, what's happening?
- The delete button is always disabled, how can I delete?
- What do Import Export and Migrate do?
- I'm having trouble with the Screen Capture utility. Any suggestions?
- Can I enter data into the notebook if my internet service provider makes me use a proxy server to access services outside of the firewall?

- There's a Java Security window from Battelle Memorial Institute telling me that "Granting the following is high risk." Is it safe to click Grant or should I click Deny?
Soon after you log in, you may encounter is a request for additional privileges (signed by our company, Battelle Memorial Institute). Click on the Grant button to enable full notebook functionality and continue. The notebook software will not delete files on your hard drive, but it does need to store and update status files when you make additions to the notebook (the notebook software may ask you to grant other privileges later on as needed).
If you would like to grant these privileges to our notebook software automatically in the future, click on the Remember this decision checkbox in privilege request windows.
- I cannot enter my password - the application beeps when I try to enter some characters, what's happening?
We have filtered out certain characters that may cause problems for our system. You can send us a message and we'll remove your name from the user list. Then you'll be able to create yourself as a new user with a new password. If the notebook you are interested in does not allow new users then let us know and we'll change your password for you.
- The delete button is always disabled, how can I delete?
The delete function is only available to Administrators of the notebook. You will need to contact your notebook administrator to have this function added.
- What do Import and Export do?
These fuctions available from the tool bar allow you to: 1) Export will export the Chapter or pages selected in the TOC an ascii file on your computer. This format is a well defined MIME format that is compatible with all DOE2000 Electronic Notebooks. As a user you can Import the chapter into a new notebook. This will create the chapter in the new notebook and show all the entries as being added by you and the current time the entries were added. Administrator you can Migrate exports, keeping the original creator and date from the original notebook.
- I'm having trouble with the Screen Capture utility. Any suggestions?
The latest release of ELN Client 5.2.2 has a built in Java screen capture utility. This saves files in .jpg format. If you have problems with this software, please contact us collab-support. You can also upload other graphics format (such as .gif and .tif) using the Upload File button.
- Can I enter data into the notebook if my internet service provider makes me use a proxy server to access services outside of the firewall?
It depends. Some internet service providers block access to all servers and ports unless you use their proxy server. On these networks, the notebook client will not connect to the PNNL webserver to upload the information. This is a confusing issue, because you can read the notebook data, but you cannot use the notebook client.
- My HTML and Plain Text editor window frames appear, but nothing but blank space shows up inside of them. - OR - There's no place to type things into the Equation editor. What's going on?
These editors sometimes need a gentle resize to work properly - especially in the case of the Equation editor. Pull a corner out longer/wider, and things should right themselves.
- I have ELN running on a computer shared by many users. Do I need to install the program for each user?
No. But... For I.E. and Netscape/Mozilla the "user home" for each user must contain an eln.ini and each user will need the ability to write to the ELNapp5.X directory. Copy the eln.ini from the current users home diectory (for an I.E. user on XP that would be c:\Documents and Settings\username) (for a Netscape/Mozilla user this is equal to the location of your Personal Bookmark file).
- I receive security violations when I attempt to login to the notebook?
Check that you are using the latest java plugin for your browser. For windows users, you can locate the Java Plugin in the control panel, listed under the browser tab the JRE should be checked on. Restart you browser and try again.
- I'm trying to run the notebook on a Mac OSX, why isn't it working?
You have downloaded and installed the ELN software on your Mac OSX and you open the notebook, but nothing happens. You are probably getting a message in the upper left hand corner of your screen saying you need to launch the application by hand. This is because the Mac does not allow our software to talk back to the computer and launch the executable. You need to browse to where you installed the ELN client application and run the ELNapp5.X by hand (double click). You should then be able to access the notebook on your Mac.
- During install I recieve a message, "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError" and the installation does not complete.
The last step in the notebook installation attempts to discover the location of your browsers java plugin. If you do not have a browser pugin, you will recieve this error. While we offer the JRE version of our software, we still need to have a previous JRE plugin in the browser for the software to work correctly. Please download and install the latest JRE from Sun.
