The Collaborative Problem Solving Environment (CPSE) will focus on the development and integration of a problem-solving environment with collaborative technologies to support the modeling and simulation of complex scientific problems. Using the newest computer software technologies available, the architecture for the CPSE will be platform independent, scalable across a network, and decoupled from the underlying technology used to implement the data model and the data storage mechanism. Abstraction from the existing Extensible Computational Chemistry Environment (Ecce) will provide a general infrastructure to support computational modeling and simulation in scientific domains. To enhance the scientist’s ability to share information and resources with colleagues at remote locations, collaborative, real-time technologies developed by the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) Collaboratory Program will be integrated with the problem-solving environment. The CPSE will provide the base infrastructure required to develop and deploy problem solving environments for the areas of climate change and combustion modeling in support of the Department of Energies (DOEs) Strategic Simulation Initiative (SSI).
